Overview:
The cost of electricity is becoming a major expense in data center operations, and according to a recent paper by Google may soon exceed the cost of IT equipment. Yet most users don't understand how large this expense is or what is driving it. Furthermore, high density IT systems like blade servers are driving power consumption up and driving data center electrical efficiency down.

Fortunately, users do have options which can dramatically reduce electricity consumption both in operating and future planned data centers. A side benefit is that the ability of data centers to handle high density is almost always enhanced when energy efficiency is improved.
